A Coruña resumes its congress calendar this Tuesday with the 46th edition of the Congress of the SEBBM, the Spanish Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, one of the most important scientific events at national level. The University of A Coruña and PALEXCO will be the facilities that will host more than 600 national and international professionals in the field of biochemistry, placing A Coruña at the top of the list of cities most suitable for holding events related to MICE tourism.

The Councillor for Culture and Tourism, Gonzalo Castro, took part in the inauguration ceremony of the congress and stressed that "A Coruña is a leader in ICT and technological innovation, the clearest example of which is the creation of AESIA, the first State Agency for Artificial Intelligence in Spain and Europe". A project to which should be added "the development of the ICT City and the already consolidated network of scientific museums in A Coruña, such as the Casa de las Ciencias, the DOMUS and the Aquarium Finisterrae, without forgetting MUNCYT, the Spanish National Museum of Science and Technology, which has its headquarters in the Galician city", stressed Castro.

All of this consolidates A Coruña as one of the Spanish cities with the greatest potential for carrying out projects at the forefront of technology and research, and it is precisely the hosting of events such as the 46th SEBBM Congress that is an example of how the city is at the centre of the scientific sector and, consequently, the tourist sector. This congress not only promotes the exchange of knowledge and advances in the field of biochemistry and molecular biology, but also has a significant impact on the local economy and the promotion of tourism in the city.

The wide range of cultural and leisure activities offered by Inés Rey's government meant that hotel occupancy rates were around 85% in July and 90% in August, opening the doors to important congresses and conferences in September, underlining the value of A Coruña as a leader in MICE tourism in the country.

Over 200 oral presentations and 500 screenings

Over the next few days, the Congress will present more than 200 oral communications, 500 panel discussions, plenary lectures, biochemistry activities and satellite activities. The latter will take place in various locations around the city in the form of scientific-artistic shows, round tables, workshops or exhibitions, such as 'Severo Ochoa: a passionate scientist', at the Domus until 30 September; 'Science and Music Sharing Notes', tomorrow at the Abanca Foundation; and 'Art and Science: The sacrifice of cells', at the MUNCYT until the end of October.

During the Congress, it will also be possible to attend symposia such as the Spanish-Portuguese Scientific Symposium and the Educational Symposium; meetings of the SEBBM scientific groups; commercial exhibitions of collaborating companies; an introductory course in biochemistry and molecular biology research; the Professional Development Forum for young researchers; and various biochemistry activities in the city.

A Coruña, the city of congresses

MICE events continue to confirm A Coruña as the perfect city to hold congresses, trade fairs and scientific or gastronomic conferences. In fact, since 2019, the Inés Rey government has been committed to promoting this type of tourism and attracting such important congresses.

To date, 12 professional meetings have been held in our city, with the participation of around 15,000 people, including Ecosystems 2030, Mundos Digitales, the 34th National Congress of the Spanish Fertility Society (SEF) and the 30th National Congress of General and Family Medicine (SEMG). There are still five congresses to be held that will attract around 4,000 people by the end of the year, such as the 69th Congress of the Spanish Society of Hospital Pharmacy in October.
